Straight, non-tapered blocks leave small wedge-shaped gaps on the outer edge of a round pit — that's normal and expected unless you're using curved or tapered fire pit blocks.

How a fire pit block count is calculated

A ring of blocks doesn't sit on the outer edge of your fire pit — it sits on a circle running through the middle of each block's depth, called the centerline. To find that centerline, subtract the block depth from the outer diameter you want: a 44 in outer diameter built with 7 in deep blocks centers its blocks on a 37 in circle.

From there, the number of blocks per row is the centerline's circumference divided by each block's face length, rounded up to the next whole block so you never come up short. π × 37 in ≈ 116.2 in of circumference, and 116.2 in ÷ 7 in ≈ 16.6, which rounds up to 17 blocks in a single row.

A square pit uses the same centerline idea, just around four straight sides instead of a curve: take the centerline perimeter — four times (side length minus block depth) — and divide by the block face length, again rounding up. Counting the perimeter as one loop shares the corner blocks between sides rather than counting them twice.

Rows (or courses) work the same way for round and square pits: divide the wall height you want by the height of one block, rounding up so you don't come up short. A 12 in wall built from 4 in blocks needs 12 ÷ 4 = 3 rows. Multiply blocks per row by rows to get the total — 17 × 3 = 51 blocks for the defaults above.

Choosing blocks and the gravel base

Retaining wall blocks used for fire pits usually come in two styles: straight-sided (the same shape used for garden walls) and tapered or curved units cut to hug a circle. Straight blocks are cheaper and easier to find, but their parallel sides leave small wedge-shaped gaps on the outer face when laid around a curve — that's expected, not a mistake, and it's usually hidden once the joints fill in. Tapered blocks fit tighter, at a higher price per unit.

Most DIY fire pits are dry-stacked (no mortar), which lets heat expand and contract the ring without cracking joints — but it also means the base underneath matters more, since there's nothing holding the first course in place except gravity and a level surface.

A compacted gravel base under the first course improves drainage, resists frost heave in cold climates, and gives you a flat, stable starting point to level the rest of the rows against. A 3–4 in depth is a common starting point for a small backyard pit. Multiply the pit's footprint by the depth to get cubic feet, then divide by 27 for cubic yards, or by roughly 0.5 cu ft per 50 lb bag — bag coverage varies by product, so check the label.

Fire pit safety and sizing basics

A common rule of thumb for backyard fire pits is an interior diameter somewhere around 36–44 in — big enough to build a comfortable fire and burn standard-length firewood, small enough that people can still talk and reach the fire from seating set back a couple of feet. Going much larger increases both fuel use and the radiant heat thrown outward, so bigger isn't always more comfortable.

Clearance from anything that can burn is the bigger safety question. General guidance often cited for open fire pits is at least 10 ft from structures, fences, branches, and dry vegetation — but these are only general figures. Many cities, HOAs, and fire districts set their own clearances, size limits, or ban open burning outright, so check local rules before you dig or order blocks.

It's also worth extending the gravel base and any non-combustible pad a few inches beyond the outer edge of the block ring, so sparks or embers that land just outside the wall land on stone rather than mulch or grass.

What size should a fire pit be?

There's no single correct size, but 36–44 in of interior diameter is a widely used starting range for a backyard wood-burning pit — enough room for a real fire and standard firewood lengths without throwing more heat than a small seating area can comfortably handle. Larger yards and larger gatherings sometimes go bigger; just remember that clearance requirements scale up with pit size too.

Do I need a gravel base?

It's not always required, but it's strongly recommended. A few inches of compacted gravel improves drainage under the pit, helps prevent the ground from heaving and cracking the joints during freeze-thaw cycles, and gives you a level, stable surface to start the first course on. Skipping it can work in dry climates on already-flat, well-draining ground, but it's cheap insurance almost everywhere else.

Can I use regular pavers or retaining wall blocks?

Yes — many DIY fire pits use ordinary retaining wall blocks or pavers rather than blocks marketed specifically for fire pits. Straight-sided blocks leave small wedge-shaped gaps on the outer face when arranged in a circle, which is cosmetic rather than structural. For a tighter, gap-free ring, look for tapered or curved units instead. Either way, confirm the block is rated for high heat, since some manufactured concrete can spall or crack under direct flame contact.

How many rows of block does a fire pit need?

Most backyard fire pits end up 2 to 4 courses tall, or roughly 8–16 in above grade — tall enough to contain logs and coals, short enough to still reach across comfortably. Divide your target wall height by the height of one block, rounding up, to get the exact row count for the blocks you're using.
